COMPUTERWORLD—I had the privilege of being invited to deliver the closing keynote at last week’s Educause Research Group’s annual symposium. Educause is higher education’s IT-focused user organization; the Research Group (known as ECAR, for Educause Center for Applied Research) focuses on taking a longer view of the pressing issues regarding higher education. Apple just acquired Lala Media, and at first I didn’t pay that much attention to this small add-on. But as I think about it some more, Lala could prove to be the most strategic move Apple’s made since the iPhone.
At first it didn’t stick out because Lala is consistent with Apple’s historical acquisition strategy in that it is a smaller, technology buy versus a large company. It won’t change Apple’s overall strategy overnight. But upon further reflection ones sees that Lala does provide Apple a path to the cloud and provides Apple users a venue for a more open experience. Five technologies, including the trendy cloud computing and old workhorse open source software, will see huge adoption increases in the US government over the next five years, largely driven by efforts to contain costs, according to an analyst firm.
In addition to cloud computing and open source software, other technologies that will be hot in the US government through 2014 include virtualization, service-oriented architecture and geospatial technologies, said Input, an analysis and consulting firm focused on government contracting. It’s not a question of if anymore; just questions of when and how. Related to this, the virtualization ecosystem in 2009 delivered optimizations, new products, and services all designed to further the benefits of virtualization and help it head towards ubiquity. HELSINKI—In the chill of a massive cave beneath an orthodox Christian cathedral, a Helsinki power firm is preparing what it thinks will be the greenest data center on the planet.
Excess heat from hundreds of computer servers to be located in the bedrock beneath Uspenski Cathedral, one of Helsinki’s most popular tourist sites, will be captured and channelled into the district heating network, a system of water-heated pipes used to warm homes in the Finnish capital.
